6/29/2015: Happy Otter-versary

image description
San Francisco, CA – June 29, 2015 - On Monday, June 29, Aquarium of the Bay celebrated the two-year anniversary of the opening of its North American river otter gallery.

Aquarium of the Bay’s three river otters – Shasta, Baxter, and Ryer – got to celebrate this “otter-versary” with exciting treats made by Aquarium biologists, including an ice caked stuffed with clams and fish (yum!), ice pops, a kiddie pool full of new toys, and even some fresh dirt to roll around in (a particular favorite of Ryer’s).

E-mail Mallory@bay.org for photos of this otterly exciting celebration.

River Otters: Watershed Ambassadors debuted two years ago as the newest fixture at Aquarium of the Bay. The Aquarium made the decision to open this exhibit as a way to educate guests about the importance of the health and interconnectedness of our natural resources.

River otters were chosen as the ambassador species for this conservation issue because they depend on healthy watersheds to survive. North American river otters live throughout California and are an important indicator for the health of the waterways that feed into San Francisco Bay. By providing the opportunity for Aquarium of the Bay’s guests – including the 20,000 school children that visit for free each year – to connect with river otters, Aquarium of the Bay is working to build a connection between its visitors, the river otters, and a healthy watershed.
